Cloud Service Providers Carving Out A Niche

By Liliana Mills

Technology always advances in leaps and bounds and that is especially true today. The Internet continues as a fertile ground for innovation and marketing and there is no shortage of people to take advantage of it either. Cloud service providers are a great example of the fertility of the net and how someone can take something that has always been around and turn it into a useful commodity.

If website owners did not utilize the cloud they would either need to host files on their own which would require storage space be purchased and somehow put onto a server so it could be made available, or they would have to pay a company to host such files for them. Either way the cost could become substantial and also take a large amount of setup time away from other website duties.

In the recent past if someone needed more storage for any reason the best way to get it was to add another hard drive to your computer. Whether internal or external it did not matter except for your preference. People would buy the drives because it was just the way it was done and no other really existed. At least none that was more efficient.

It does not matter what kind of website it is, they all need storage of some degree. Some sites that deal in files or software need large amounts of it for distribution or transfer of the files they deal with. Other sites just need it to be able to maintain their database of users or other information. Regardless of the reason, the need was evident.

As websites started to see a fit for their files on such sites they started to supplement their own archives with cloud service providers because it was smart, economical, and fast. They could gain tons of space without any additions to their own hardware and very quick and short additions of code to their pages.

When people access a cloud service provider website they are given many options for their files. Normally storage space is limited at first but they all offer various ways to increase your amount with fees or by completing tasks that are really marketing strategies for the company. For example, sending information to a friend and getting them to sign up will often get more space for the initial user.

They were offering these spaces for free because they could make money off the advertising space they sold. This was a tried and true way to make money on the Internet and they could use it there too. Security did become a concern and for some places failed to protect the consumer. Even so, people trusted these companies for the most part.

Cloud service providers today are so numerous that if you do not find the right deal for you all you have to do is keep looking. When sites start hitting the Internet that categorize and list out the services of other sites and rank the top 10 of something, you know it has "arrived". Such has already taken place with these and they do not seem to be going away any time soon.
